How to tell if your Facebook Ads work (the metrics to track, what to ignore)

When you’re analyzing your Facebook Ads, ignore the following indicators of “performance” that are shown in your Ads Manager:

  • Quality ranking
  • Engagement rate
  • Reach
  • Impressions

I only focus on two things:

  1. Cost Per Result (primary)
  2. Cost Per Click (secondary)

Here’s what I do with the ads we run, feel free to follow my lead.

I start by setting up a new CONVERSIONS campaign, this means that Facebook will adjust the targeting of my audience by tracking who performs the action I’m tracking.

In other words, if I am tracking Purchases then Facebook will narrow my audience to focus on the people in my audience pool who resemble buyers that went all the way through to purchase my product.

If I am tracking Scheduled Calls, then Facebook will narrow my audience to focus on the people in my audience pool who resemble prospects that set appointments on my calendar.

Does that make sense? (if you’re feeling lost, I got you… skip to the end of this blog post)

Inside of my campaign, I always set up at least two ad sets – one for cold audiences and another ad set for retargeting. The “cold” audience is the people who fit my target demographic but have not bought yet. The “retargeting” audience is a custom audience I set up for people who have either clicked on my link, or engaged with my Page.

Inside of my ad sets, I use a minimum of TWO images and TWO variations of the ad text. I try for more, but I don’t want to experiment too much at the outset of the campaign.

To keep your sanity…

  1. Don’t check your ads every day
  2. Don’t touch anything for a week (yes, even if you’re not seeing results)
  3. Don’t spend more than you can afford to lose when you’re starting out (I recommend $10/day for a brand new ad campaign, and then scaling up when your ads start really humming)

Good luck, and most importantly HAVE FUN!!

If you need help let me know, we can set all this up for you.

If you’re more of a do-it-yourself’er (or you got lost when I was explaining the ins-and-outs of Facebook Ads) then you should go and check out Facebook Ads Mastery, the course that I created for insurance agents to excel with their own ads in 5 days or less.

Facebook Ads Mastery is the course that I wish someone else made when I was starting out – it’s got a lot of substance, with none of the extra fluff other experts put in there to flush out their course. Ick.
