Alex Branning, experienced web developer for hire

I have been doing web development for eight years now; and I’m looking to work on a per project basis with other web development firms in Southern California. My experience includes high-end application development, Internet security, advanced search engine optimization and complex front-end layout.

My Code of Ethics sets the bar very high for my integrity, honesty, timeliness and quality of work. I will deliver a signed Code of Ethics to you with my first contract so that you know I intend to stand behind it and deliver a product I am proud of while maintaining a level of integrity that’s hard to find in the web development industry. If you’re interested in bringing me on the team I can send a list of references you can contact to learn more about me: the quality of my work, my communication skills, my testing procedures and my integrity

I am looking to work on a per-project basis; please email me your project specifics and I will get back to you with a quote as soon as possible. If you’re interested in bringing me on a project, please either call me at (661) 951 2252 or email me: alex@branninggroup.com.

Zen Cart: Add Items to Cart (using Ajax, no page refresh)

One of my clients came to me with an idea that would enhance the usability of her store: she wanted her customers to be able to add items to the shopping cart with no page refresh, but it had to be ridiculously easy to use.

I had to make quite a few enhancements to the user experience; including:

  1. Add to Cart button no longer created a page refresh
  2. Add to Cart button triggered a JavaScript alert letting them know their item was added to the shopping cart
  3. The header bar text (”My Cart: # Items”) had to be modified to show the overall number of items, and not the number of individual products within the shopping cart. For example, if the customer purchased two widgets and three doodles it had to display “My Cart: 5 items” instead of Zen Cart’s standard functionality that would have displayed “My Cart: 2 items”

The client has a trade-only web site so this functionality isn’t available to on the public-facing web site. Please email me and let me know if you would like to get my username and password for the demo store so you can see the functionality in action!

Zen Cart: Edit Items in Shopping Cart (including attributes)

One of my clients came to me with a dilemma many Zen Cart users face: they wanted their customers to be able to modify items with attributes within the shopping cart and not force the buyer to delete the item and add it to their cart again.

I was able to make this happen! You can see it working on http://www.namelynewborns.com/.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Buyer adds item to cart
  2. Buyer clicks “edit” to edit the desired attributes
  3. Buyer clicks “save” to submit changes to item
  4. Cart refreshes showing new attributes for item

Please email me and let me know if you would like me to install this on your Zen Cart!

Calaisio.com

The Branning Group was able to do this by using CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, PHP and Zen Cart. By using these different types of technologies the Branning Group was able to make the new Calaisio site fully functional and match everything that was asked for.

Wishy

Wishy

Wishy for Everything is a start-up company that is launching a wishlist service that will be embedded in all popular social networks and allow people to share their wishlists globally.

The business model for Wishy.com required them to have over 900,000 products in their catalog….which in turn required a revisionary way for them to search their catalog since Zen Cart doesn’t handle very well with a large catalog. We developed a custom search indexing tool that returned results sorted by relevance in under .2 seconds!

Grab.com

Demand Media contracted Alex Branning in April of 2007 to take over the maintenance and upgrades for their gaming-centered social network property Grab.com. The tasks included adding a paid subscription model for premium features; optimizing the site for organic search engine traffic; stamping out the bugs in the site (over 200 when I started) and over-seeing the site’s re-design. Over the course of the six-month contract the traffic increased over 33% and the site loading times were cut down by over two seconds per page.
